New Interregional Water Tourist Route to be Created in Russia
Tourism and International Cooperation Agency of Arkhangelsk Oblast has put forward the initiative of developing a new water route: Murmansk – Franz Josef Land Archipelago – Novaya Zemlya Archipelago – the Solovetsky Islands – Arkhangelsk.
The proposal has been supported by the government of Murmansk Oblast, Russian Arctic National Park, and regional tour operators, which have formed an interregional working group.
An agreement had been reached earlier, according to which the Murmansk motor ship Klavdiya Yelanskaya could be used on the route starting 2015.
Experts agree that the travel market of Russia’s North-West needs new tourism products.
“In light of the development prospects for the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation, travel business has been displaying heightened interest in the near-Arctic territories that are part of the northernmost national park in Russia ‘Russian Arctic’, as well as in the coastal municipal formations of Arkhangelsk and Murmansk Oblasts. Both foreign cruise operators and Russian tour operators have detected a growth of demand for these destinations during the past few years,” says the message from the tourism agency of Arkhangelsk Oblast.
According to the Russian Inland Marine Transportation Development Strategy until 2030, which has been recently prepared by the Ministry of Transport, the projected investments in the sector are 2.26 trillion rubles ($55,330bn). One trillion rubles will come from the budget of federal subjects, and the other 1.2 trillion – from extra-budgetary sources. However, experts say that significant positive developments in the industry of water tourism will already happen during the course of the following 3-4 years.
As of late, Russians have been particularly interested in unusual cruises. At the end of February, the company Poseidon Expeditions organized a road show across the cities of the Urals and Siberia. The operator presented its exclusive tourism product to the travel agencies of Yekaterinburg, Tyumen, and Novosibirsk – trips to polar and underexplored areas of our planet.
